Valentine’s Day is a holiday meant for celebrating love and romance, originally originating from the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia and the legend of Saint Valentine. Although Valentine’s Day is a popular American holiday, it is also celebrated internationally, in countries like Canada, Mexico, France, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Americans were recorded exchanging hand-made valentines as early as the 1700s, and it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. Today, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, and the holiday is celebrated as a time to exchange gifts, sentiments, or to sit down together for a shared romantic meal.
