In 2019, the astronomical calendar states that the first day of spring is March 20th, meaning that we're oh so close to being able to welcome the first official days of spring. Each year, the short days of winter begin to extend and dreary weather slowly begins to fade with the welcoming of spring. Days are brighter, longer, and filled with fresh scents of flowers and new buds sprouting everywhere around us.

In your home, welcoming in the season of spring can brighten the atmosphere immensely. With the winter season behind us, we can start to open up the windows and let the fresh breath of Mother Nature into our homes. Our kitchens are the perfect place to celebrate the season of spring, and there are a few simple ways to help invite in the bright awakening of the season.

Ready to welcome spring? Time to air out, dust off, and spruce up your kitchen for the new season to come. Regardless of what the thermometer still says, spring will be upon us soon enough. Get ready to throw open the windows and let in the fresh breeze.

1.) Flowers

Nothing can lighten a dreary space or a tired kitchen better than a fresh bouquet of flowers. Flowers make everything better, and adding flowers to your kitchen can instantly brighten the mood and uplift the energy of the space. In fact, a study from Harvard Medical School found that people have less anxiety, less worry, and more compassion when there are fresh flowers present in the home.

In your kitchen, there are no rules for creating floral arrangements or bouquets. Gather wildflowers outside for a DIY arrangement, float blossoms in a crystal dish, or fill mason jars with fresh blooms. Whatever your preference, having fresh flowers in your kitchen will brighten the mood and welcome in the colorful blooms of spring.

2.) Handtowels

A simple change, yes, but doing the dishes can become a little less dreary with the addition of a spring-themed handtowel in your kitchen. Winter kitchen accessories tend to be more dark and dramatic, while spring accessories tend to be more light and fun. Add a few teatowels decorated with pastel colors, floral prints, or funny scenes and hang them from hooks, your stove, or even from clothespins for a shabby-chic feel.

3.) Sprout Seeds Indoors

It might still be too cold outside to plant seeds in the ground, but that doesn't mean you can't get a head start planting seeds in your kitchen. Some herbs are easy to grow indoors and can be grown for your own personal use. Herbs like mint, chives, parsley, basil, thyme, and cilantro are easy to grow in your kitchen and will provide a burst of fresh scent each time you pass.

You can also start fragile plants in seed trays indoors and watch the small shoots sprout on your windowsill. When temperatures rise and the sun is shining more, you can transfer the shoots to the ground outdoors.

4.) Open Up Windows

The weather outside might still be chilly but we gain more daylight with each passing day. Another simple fix to brighten up your kitchen? Open your windows up and take advantage of the extra sunshine that starts to grace the still-cold winter days. Sunshine can brighten up even the darkest of days and after a freezing cold winter, our bodies are craving some natural Vitamin D. Open up the blinds! Open up the windows! Let spring into your kitchen.

5.) Display Fruit

After-frost fruits can be the perfect centerpiece in your kitchen, as well as bowls filled with citrus that remain in their peak during winter and spring. Grapefruit stays sweet and juicy from January into early summer, and lemons are at their juicy best from winter into summer as well. In warmer areas, Apricots come into season towards the end of spring, and peak strawberry season is April through June. Fill a bowl with colorful fruit for a centerpiece for your kitchen counters or tables and welcome in the bountiful harvest of spring.
